JPG is made smaller with MozJPEG, PNG by reducing its colours the way TinyPNG does, SVG by taking out what draws nothing. Each row shows how much smaller the file got.

How to compress images

Step 1

Pick a level

Balanced makes most photos several times smaller with no visible change, and Smart measures each picture. Or set a file size to stay under.

Step 2

Add your images

JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF and SVG stay in their format, or pick AVIF or the smallest of three. HEIC becomes JPG.

Step 3

Compare and download

Press Compare to slide between the original and the new file, zoomed in. Download one, or all of them as a ZIP.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers about what the converter keeps and what stays private.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser, so your pictures are read and the new files are written on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.

How much smaller do the files get?

Most phone photos get three to ten times smaller on Balanced with no change you can see. A PNG screenshot or graphic usually loses half to three quarters. Each row shows the exact saving, and the top of the list the total.

How does it work?

JPG and HEIC photos are written again with MozJPEG, the encoder behind many image compressors. A PNG keeps its transparency and gets at most 256 colours, the way TinyPNG does it; on Light it keeps every colour and is only packed better. WEBP, AVIF and JPEG XL are written again at a lower quality. Each level looks about the same in every format.

What does Smart do?

It tries each picture at several qualities and measures how alike the result is to the original (SSIM), then keeps the smallest one that still looks the same. A detailed photo keeps more quality, a smooth one goes further. Its row says the quality it picked.

Can I see the difference before I download?

Yes. Press Compare on a file: the original is on the left, the new file on the right, and you drag the line between them. Zoom to 100% or 200% and drag to look around, or pinch on a phone. Show what changed marks the pixels that changed in red.

Can I set the quality for one picture?

Yes. In Compare, move Quality for this picture and look at the result and its size, then press Use for this picture. Use for all sets it for every file.

AVIF, JPEG XL or the smallest of three?

AVIF makes photos about a third smaller than JPG at the same look and opens in every current browser, but takes longer to make. JPEG XL is for apps that read it. Smallest of JPG, WEBP, AVIF tries the three on each picture and keeps the smallest.

Can I compress to a set size, like 200 KB?

Yes. Pick Max file size, or Or smaller by for a part of each file, such as 50 %. The best quality that fits is found, and the picture is made smaller in pixels only if even the lowest quality is too big.

Does it compress SVG and GIF?

An SVG stays an SVG: comments, the data drawing programs leave in it and extra digits are taken out, and the result is checked to draw exactly the same. A GIF is kept as it is for now.

What if a file cannot get smaller?

Then you get the original back, its pixels as they were, and its row says it is already as small as it gets. A file never comes back bigger than the original apart from the short FormatYard note (see below). Photo details such as the date and place are taken out unless you keep them under Extra.

Is there a limit?

No daily limit and no file size limit set by us. Drop many files at once and download them one by one or together as a ZIP. Very large pictures depend on how much memory your device has.

What is "Created with FormatYard.com" in my files?

Like the photo apps that write their own name, FormatYard writes this short note in each file it makes: in the Software field of a JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, JPEG XL or TIFF, as a comment in a GIF or SVG, and as the maker of a PDF. It holds nothing about you. To take it out, along with every other photo detail, use the EXIF remover.
