PDF to DXF converter

Lines, arcs and text from a vector PDF become a DXF that CAD, CNC and laser programs open.

DXF version

The newest DXF: for current CAD programs.

Drawing
  • ScaleReal sizes when the PDF was plotted to scale
  • Which pagesEach page becomes its own drawing
  • LayersThe PDF's own layers, else one per colour
  • TextText you can edit
You get
  • A text DXFThe kind any CAD, CNC or laser program reads
  • Layers keptThe PDF's own layers, or one per colour
  • Text as text or as outlinesOutlines for cutting and engraving

Lines, arcs and text come from the PDF's own drawing. A scanned PDF is a picture: its lines cannot be read yet.

How to convert PDF to DXF

Step 1

Choose the version and scale

DXF 2018 suits current CAD programs; for older CNC or laser software, pick 2000. Then pick the scale the PDF was plotted at.

Step 2

Add your PDF

Drop it in the box or pick it from your computer. Each page you pick becomes its own drawing.

Step 3

Save the DXF

It is written in this tab and saved to your downloads folder. Several pages download together as a ZIP.

FAQ

Common questions

What comes across from the PDF, how to get real sizes, and what stays private.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs inside your browser, so the PDF is read and the drawing is written on your own computer. Nothing is sent to a server.

Which PDFs work?

Vector PDFs: the kind AutoCAD, Revit, ArchiCAD, SolidWorks and other CAD programs plot, or any PDF whose lines stay sharp however far you zoom in. A scanned PDF is a picture of a drawing, with no lines to read, and the result says so.

How do I get real sizes?

Pick the scale the PDF was plotted at, for example 1:100 for a plan where 1 cm on paper is 1 m. Lengths then come out in millimetres at full size. Pick 1:1 to keep the paper size in millimetres, or Other for any scale. To check, measure a length you know in the drawing.

What layers does the drawing get?

If the PDF kept its CAD layers, as AutoCAD plots do, the drawing gets the same layer names. Otherwise every colour gets its own layer, so you can turn groups of lines on and off. You can also put everything on layer 0.

Is the text editable?

Yes: text in the PDF becomes text in the drawing, at its size and angle. Pick Drawn as lines to get each letter's outline instead, which CNC, laser and engraving programs can cut. Text that AutoCAD plotted as lines (SHX fonts) stays lines.

What is left out?

Pictures inside the PDF and colour gradients are left out, and dashed lines come out solid unless the PDF draws each dash. Anything outside the page or hidden by the PDF is left out too. The result lists what it skipped.

Which DXF version should I pick?

DXF 2018 for current CAD programs. Older CNC, laser and cutting software often reads only older DXF files: pick 2000 for those.
