FAQ

Common questions

What the converter keeps, what it changes, and what stays private.

Is my drawing uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs inside your browser, so the DXF is read and the result is made on your own computer. Nothing is sent to a server.

Which DXF files work?

DXF files from AutoCAD R12 up to the 2018 format, in text (ASCII) or binary form. That includes the R12 DXF many CNC, laser and cutting programs save.

Why does "2007" give me a 2004 file?

AutoCAD 2007 opens files in the 2004 format, and so do AutoCAD 2004 to 2009. Saving in that format is the most reliable way to reach all of them.

What changes on the way?

A table becomes a block of the lines and text it is drawn with, so it looks the same but is no longer a table. Older versions get the same rewrites as in our DWG version converter. The result lists every change it made.

Is anything lost?

Layers, blocks, layouts, dimensions (still linked to what they measure), hatches, helixes and text are carried over. Objects the reader does not know yet are left out, and the result lists them.

What does R14 leave out?

R14 is from 1997, and its format has no lineweights, true colours, transparency or annotative scales. Lines take the default width, colours become the nearest of the 255 standard ones, annotative objects show at one scale, and objects R14 does not know, such as constraints and the history of 3D solids, are left out. The solids themselves are kept. Pick 2000 if the program that opens the file can read it.
